How to Prioritise Yourself During the Christmas Chaos

The holiday season can be magical, but let’s be real—December often feels like a whirlwind of shopping, social commitments, and family dynamics. Somewhere in the mix, your own needs and well-being tend to get pushed to the back burner. Sound familiar?

That’s exactly why I’ve created The Festive Self-Care Series! Over the next two weeks, I’ll be dropping a total of four podcast episodes to serve as your go-to guide for navigating the holiday season with ease, balance, and self-love. Today, we’re kicking off Part 1 with simple, actionable strategies to help you prioritise YOU—because when you’re at your best, you can show up better for everyone else too.

1. Reframe Self-Care as Non-Negotiable

First things first: self-care is NOT selfish—it’s essential. Think of yourself as a cup. When you’re full, you can pour into others; when you’re empty, burnout looms.

Aligned Action: Block “me time” into your calendar like an unmissable appointment. Whether it’s 15 minutes to sit in silence, read a book, meditate, or stretch, honour that time as sacred. Sunday planning sessions are your best friend—take a few moments each week to schedule in self-care, so it’s as much a priority as everything else on your to-do list.

2. Identify Your Energy Drainers and Fillers

Holiday chaos can drain your energy faster than you realise. Crowded shopping centres, endless commitments, or even tricky family dynamics can leave you feeling depleted. But the key to balance lies in counteracting those drains with activities that genuinely replenish you.

Aligned Action: Make a list of what energises you—a brisk walk, journaling, a cozy bath, or baking something nourishing—and commit to at least one “filler” activity daily.

3. Set Boundaries with Grace

Boundaries are an act of self-respect, and they’re especially crucial during the holidays when demands on your time seem endless. Saying “no” doesn’t make you mean or unkind; it makes you intentional about preserving your energy.

Aligned Action: Embrace the Joy of Missing Out (JOMO) by declining invitations or delegating tasks that stretch you too thin. Use phrases like, “I’d love to, but I need to recharge today,” or simply say, “No, thank you.”

4. Create a Wellness Haven at Home

Your home should be a sanctuary—a place where you can reset your nervous system and recharge. Simple changes can make a big difference in how calm and supported you feel.

Aligned Action: Diffuse calming essential oils, declutter your space, create a corner for journaling or meditation, or stock up on Epsom salts for a soothing bath. These small acts can ground you, even in the midst of seasonal chaos.

Final Thought: You’re Worth It

This week, I invite you to schedule at least one moment of pure “you time.” Remember, self-care isn’t just okay—it’s necessary. When you take care of yourself, you’re better equipped to enjoy the magic of the season and share that joy with those around you.

Let me know in the comments: Which of these tips will you be trying first? And stay tuned for Part 2 of The Festive Self-Care Series, where we’ll dive even deeper into strategies to help you thrive this holiday season!
